4G aka "IMT Advanced" is the next logical step and technological advancement for communicating through cellular wireless technologies.

One of the main advantages of 4G technology – as it has been with previous cellular wireless advancements – is higher data rates. This will benefit the end user by allowing faster access to multimedia and video while on the move.

3G data rate transfer speeds right now peak around 2mbps (2 megabits per second). 4G will peak at 4gbps (4 GIGABITS per second). As a comparison, your home cable internet speeds range between 1.5 – 3 mbps and actually peak at 30mbps (megabits not gigabits!!) so this will be a considerable bump.

See below for some good links on the subject

The next step up from the 3g network currently in place. It’s about 3x faster compared and should start becoming available late this year into next year.
