I’m interested in getting a GPS-enabled phone but I don’t want a 3G phone. Does that combination exist? If they do, would they need a specific type of cellphone network that might not exist in my country? If so, where can I find information on country-by-country availability for the type of cellphone networks that would be needed to support them?
I could be wrong, but since GPS is a satellite service I think the GPS chips used on cellphones actually communicate straight to the sky and not through the network. The "location" service offered on non-GPS enabled phones is different; that relies on triangulation with nearby cell towers and is not as accurate as GPS.

I’m planning on purchasing this phone later this month unlocked from a vendor a year prior to the official north american release. I know the phone itself will work with T-mobile or AT&T it’s a SIM phone. I’m just wondering if the wireless 3g internet will work in north america?
In US, T-Mobile uses 1700MHz and 2100MHz to implement HSPA 3G, and AT&T uses 850 and 1900MHz for their HSPA 3G network. To support 3G, the phone has to support both frequencies – so just having one is not enough.
If you look at the press release from Sony about the X1 here:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/pressreleasedetails/key.PressResource.Global_X1-20080210
And scroll down to the bottom, it says it will support all of the above. So the answer is yes, it will work on either AT&T or T-Mobile’s US 3g network.

I am gonna buy a phone of E-bay….
The phone i want does not come with 3g network.
If i buy it is there some weird way to change it to work on the Next G network????
No, there is a computer chip in the phone that receives the signal from the network. Unless you can get a chip that receives Next G and know how to incorporate it into the phone, then your out of luck.

AT&T and Verizon are always bragging about having the better 3G coverage and Sprint is already on the 4G network…so why dont they move to 4G as well?
4G stands for 4th generation cell phone network. The 3rd generation network carried broadband speeds, like a dsl or cable modem. The 2nd generation network has slower speeds more like a dial-up modem.
The 4g network is supposed to bring much higher speeds than already exist for the 3g network – the kind of speed you might find at a university computer lab, or the speed of communications between computers in a LAN network. It features speeds in the 100,000-1,000,000 kilobit (100-1000 Mbit) range, or about 20x as fast as 3G.
Downloads would be nearly instantaneous, and really large files such as a CD or DVD worth of data can be downloaded in less than a minute. And that might be worth it if you download Huge amounts of data (or for instance HD video) on a regular basis, and you’re not happy with 3G speeds.

I have an AT&T phone that has a 3G network and I have been seeing a lot about the 3g network on the commercials. I have no idea what a 3G network is. Can someone please enlighten me. Thank you.
3G means third generation phones. The very simple explanation to this kind of phones is that it will enable you to not only hear the voice of the person you are speeking to , but also SEE him live..provided ofcourse both the perosns have a 3G phone and 3G enabled network

I want to get a 3g phone, can they be used in any country that has a 3g network? (assuming you are subscribed)
for example will a 3g phone bought in one country work in another country, say new zealand?
they sure can. 3g is all the same around the world. a 3g network in new zealand is like one in the states.

Im deciding between a non 3g phone and a phone that runs on the 3g network. I dont go online much with the phone but i do a lot of multimedia texting. Will the 3g network make texting pictures and such faster? Or texting in general faster? Or does the 3g only make the web browsing faster?
I’m not a pro or anything, but I’m pretty sure that 3g makes EVERYTHING faster.

Is it even possible for an unlocked 2g Iphone using a T-mobile data network to make use of the 3g data network? I’m on my, 4th or 5th unlock/jailbreak and have yet to be able to make use of the 3g network. I figured once T-mobile started using the 3g network it would follow shortly. What’s stopping this from happening?
Ah, good call. But what about a 3g Iphone? I unlocked one for my friend and you have to switch off the 3g data network to use the unlock. So its a 3g phone capable of using the 3g network, but when using the an unlock it is not capable. Why?
ATT uses a different bandwidth than all the other carriers. there’s no way for you to use the 3G on tmobile. Apple made the phone that way. In Europe they sell the phone supporting the bandwidth you need for t-mobile. If you buy it here, then you can only use the EDGE network. It’s not that bad.

I want to get a 3g phone, but I don’t like the ones T-mobile has, is there any good phones out there that can work with T-mobiles 3g network? I want it to be priced under $350.
T-mobile USA uses 1700Mhz for the 3g network. This is unique in the world so your options are limited to devices developed only for this market.
Samsung t639, t819, Nokia 3555, 6263, Sony Ericsson TM506, and Google G1.

Do you feel 2g networks will ever be scraped as 3G gains ground? Or is this unlikely? I guess the problem is if 2G was scraped, any phone more than 2 years old would become virtually obsolete.
Thanks
There are many other problems associated along with what you’ve said and also most people can’t yet afford a 3G phone. 2G technology will be around for some time to come.
