Why is my Blackberry Storm not connecting to the 3G network?

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

In the little booklet it says the service notification on the top right of the Storm will say "3G" or "EDGE" whenever it is in those coverage areas, yet I still haven’t seen this. The browser is fairly slow, at least compared to my friends iPhones. What is up with this? It’s kind of annoying, since I got this phone almost exclusively for this purpose. I’m not getting any different service than I was with my old, text-only phone.

Hit the OPTIONS button from the menu

MOBILE NETWORK

And check that the DATA SERVICES option is set to connect to 3G

I found this problem when I got mine, it was set up for 2G access only, not to roam from 2G to 3G depending on what service was available.

I am looking for a smartphone. Please explain the 3G network and why it is so important to a smartphone?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

I am considering the Samsung Omnia… but it is not 3G compatible. Why is this a drawback? Any recommendations for a great phone to purchase? I want ability to browse the web, check my email, and I want a decent camera on the phone. Speakerphone is a must also.

3G is just the term for the latest phone technology, and allows more advanced services to be provided on the phones, live TV streaming, faster internet, proper e-mail facilities.

As for suggesting a phone, that depends on what phones are available for the network you are using.

Personally I have the Blackberry Storm, and I love it.

Can BlackBerry Bold Go Where No Smartphone Has Gone Before?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

More info: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/258878

Can the BlackBerry Bold rival the features and functionality of Apple’s iPhone 3G? In light of today’s Canadian launch of the fastest BlackBerry available yet, Digital Journal TV tested the new device to see if it’s the summer’s hottest smartphone.

Digital Journal — The BlackBerry Bold is now available in Canada, giving Canucks the first chance to try out the fastest BlackBerry device in North America. The Bold runs on Rogers’ fast 3G network (the first time a BlackBerry has worked on such a network) and its speed doesn’t disappoint.

Just a month after bringing Apple’s iPhone 3G to Canadians (see our video review of the iPhone 3G here), Rogers Wireless partnered with Research in Motion to unveil the Bold on Thursday.

John Boynton, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Wireless, said in a press release: “The much awaited BlackBerry Bold smartphone is a ‘must have’ for connoisseurs of premium products and mobile workers who want to remain connected and productive no matter where their jobs may take them.”

The Bold is available for $399 on a three-year plan with Rogers.

So what’s so great about the Bold? Its screen offers impressive definition and clarity housed in an elegant 114mm x 66mm x 15mm design. It runs on the 3g network as well as Wi-Fi. A built-in GPS comes with BlackBerry Maps and Documents To Go, and lets users edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents while travelling. 1GB of on-board memory is more than previous generations, and memory card slots can expand the storage capacity to up to 16 GB.

A 2-megapixel camera rounds out the device, and also offers video recording (unlike the iPhone 3G). Syncing music and video to the Bold via iTunes is simple, which should appeal to heavy multimedia users who want to stick with the BlackBerry brand.

Digital Journal TV was on location at the Canadian launch for the Bold, and we spoke to Research in Motion and Rogers Wireless to find out how this smartphone compares to its predecessors…and why it may elevate to iPhone-killer status. Maybe.

verizon 4g network effect?

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

I have a question.. Idk if any of you have verizon but I heard they are planning on moving to a 4g network. If they do move to a 4g network.. do u think this will effect the 3g i have now on my blackberry.. Will my phone be compatible with it or will i have to wait for a more advance phone? I’m just curious because.. i know the speed of 3g is really slow .. and i can’t wait till 4g comes out.. more phones and more speed!

It will be like 3G and edge are today. Basically, if you have a 4G phone, you’ll be able to access the 4G network. Of course, if you don’t have a 4G phone, you won’t be able to access the 4G network. Once they roll out 4G to your area, you will need to upgrade to a newer phone in order to take advantage of the speed and features it has to offer.

This should not impact your current service though. If anything, your current 3G service should improve because the biggest users (read: geeks) of the 3g network will probably jump on to the 4G network as soon as possible. Freeing up bandwidth for you, the "old-fashioned" 3G user.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Feel free to be excited about 4G and to get a phone as soon as it’s available in your area. But don’t think that you’ll get ignored or anything.
